Calories: 306 per servingTotal Time: 28 mins1. Prepare the frozen cauliflower rice by placing the entire bag of cauliflower in the microwave. Cook according to the package instructions, about 4 to 4 ½ minutes. Set aside. Take the nori sheet and cut it into 6 equal strips.
2. Take one nori strip and place it on the plate. Most of the strip will be hanging off the plate. Place the musubi mold on top of one of the nori strips. Fill the mold with ⅙ of the cauliflower rice and use the press to tamp the cauliflower rice down. Do not press too hard to where the water is starting to be released from the cauliflower rice. Have all 6 of the shaped cauliflower rice ready to go.
3. Cut Spam into 6 equal slices. Place in a cold, large nonstick skillet and place over medium heat. Allow the Spam to cook very slowly to allow it to get nice and crispy (this will take about 10 minutes on the first side). Turning the heat down to low if they are browning too quickly.
4. Flip the Spam and allow it to cook for 8-10 minutes on the second side. Combine the soy sauce and sweetener in a small bowl. Once Spam is crispy add the soy sauce and sweetener that has been mixed together. Move around the Spam in the soy sauce mixture and cook for 1-2 minutes or until the soy sauce has thickened and has glazed the Spam.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you cook musubi in the microwave?

Drape a slightly wet paper towel over the musubi (this keeps the rice from drying out) and microwave for one minute. We’re supposed to add soy sauce AND sugar to the Spam? As crazy as it sounds, yes! I know Spam is already sooo salty. But adding this Spam musubi sauce (aka soy sauce and sugar) is essential to getting the right Spam musubi “taste.”

How to make musubi in instant pot?

I find it easiest to use a rice cooker, or the rice setting on the Instant Pot. Once your rice and SPAM are cooked (yes, you’re actually suppose to COOK the SPAM!), it’s time to mold or press your musubi. I like to lay out the strip of nori (seaweed) and put the musubi mold on top of it.

How do you make musubi?

Top with a slice of luncheon meat, and remove press. Wrap nori around rice mold, sealing edges with a small amount of water. (Rice may also be formed by hand in the shape of the meat slices, 1 inch thick.) Musubi may be served warm or chilled.

How do you marinate rice without a musubi press?

If you don't have a musubi press, open both ends of the can and carefully use it to shape and press your rice. Cook time does not include cooking the rice. Whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar and sugar or honey to make your marinade. Place SPAM slices in a single layer in a shallow dish and pour marinade over the top.
