Our family recipe for Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls uses a filling of ground meat and rice and a thick tomato sauce flavored with sauerkraut and bacon. Our recipe for Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls is an authentic family version, modified by four generations of Hungarian-American cooks.
Once the cabbage leaves are softened, stuff them with a mixture of minced meat, uncooked rice, eggs, onion, garlic, paprika, ground black pepper, salt, and roll them up into tight little packages. Place the cabbage rolls between 2 layers of rinsed and drained sauerkraut, pour water over and bake for 1.5 – 2 hours.
Töltött Káposzta or stuffed cabbage rolls is however more than just some meat wrapped with cabbage. This dish is absolutely wholesome and nutritious.
Place rolled stuffed cabbage in a layer. Cover with shredded cabbage and sauerkraut. Place remaining rolled stuffed cabbage and cover with remaining cabbage and sauerkraut. Combine: Pour over layered rolls and, if necessary, add enough water to just cover cabbage. Place lid on pot and bring to boil. Lower flame to simmer approximately 2 hours.
