1. In a medium skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add onion. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is soft and golden brown, about 25-30 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
2. While the onions are cooking in the skillet, prepare the rest of the sandwich ingredients.
3. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Shape mixture into 4 long, thin, oval patties (about 6-inches by 4-inches each).
4. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large cast iron skillet (or other heavy skillet) over medium-high heat. Cook 2 patties until well browned on both sides and cooked through, about 2 minutes per side. Set aside on a plate. Repeat with another tablespoon of butter and the remaining 2 patties. Remove from heat. Transfer patties to plate. Wipe skillet clean.
