Hydrox® is the original creme-filled chocolate sandwich cookie! It debuted in 1908 and was manufactured by Sunshine® Biscuits. Sunshine Biscuits was purchased by Keebler® in 1996, and in 1999, Keebler® replaced Hydrox® with a similar but reformulated product named Droxies®.
Though they were created more than 100 years ago, in 1912, they were actually the second of its kind to hit the market. The original was launched by a company called Sunshine Biscuits in 1908 — unfortunately named Hydrox, a misplaced mashup of hydrogen and oxygen, which was supposed to suggest "purity of product" (via Atlas Obscura ).
Sunshine Biscuits was purchased by Keebler in 1996, and in 1999, Keebler replaced Hydrox with a similar but reformulated product called "Droxies". Keebler was acquired by Kellogg's in 2001, and Kellogg's removed Droxies from the market in 2003.
But while Oreo ascended to become something of a cultural touchstone, Hydrox retained its partisans, in part also because the slightly-more-bitter cookie was also kosher. The legacy of Sunshine Biscuits also didn’t suffer too badly, and Jacob Loose died a rich man.
