As giftable as it is delicious … make your own Homemade Amaretto this holiday season! McCormick® Almond and Pure Vanilla Extracts help recreate the signature flavor of the popular liquor. 1 Place brown sugar and water in medium saucepan. Cook and stir on medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat. Let stand until cooled.
You can drink amaretto on its own, or use it in cocktails like The Godfather, or an Island Champagne Cocktail. What Is Amaretto? Amaretto is a sweet liquor that originated in Italy. Originally, Amaretto was flavored with butter almonds, but these days commercial brands can be made from apricot stones, peach stones or almonds.
Amaretti are a traditional almond flavoured Italian cookie which has a soft and pillowy centre encased in a delicious sweet, crispy shell. Traditionally flavoured with Amaretto liquor (hence the name) I have used sugar-free almond extract instead.
The name “Amaretto” comes from the Italian word amaro which means “bitter”. A funny little fact is that cyanide is found naturally in almonds and it has to be processed out of the almonds before its use in this liquor.
