Total Time: 22 minsCategory: Main CourseCalories: 420 per serving1. Start with quality filets. I like a 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inch thick that will be 6-8 ozs. each.
2. One of the most important steps is resting the filets at room temperature for 30 or so minutes. This raises the temperature of the meat making getting your desired internal temperature much easier.
3. While the filets are resting, get your grill surface temperature about 450° (500° max). Just over medium for me but more medium high on lesser grills. Please be sure the surface temperature is correct. This is the most common souce of errors. See A Beginners Guide to Grill Temperature on a Gas Grill for details if you are not sure. Of course, clean and oil the grill.
4. Give the filets a light coat of the seasoning of your choice. Do it just before grilling. I use a nice sprinkling of my 7:2:2 seasoning, but just a nice sprinkle of coarse salt and pepper will do.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do you grill a filet mignon?

Based on several recommendations, you should grill a 2-inch filet mignon cut for around 19-24 minutes at 145°F for Medium-Rare doneness and 24-29 Minutes at 160°F for Medium doneness. After indirect grilling at the upper recommended temperatures, give it a quick sear on both sides to create a nice crust all around.

How do you cook a medium rare filet mignon?

For the perfect medium-rare filet mignon, grill for 7-8 minutes for a 1-inch steak, and 9-11 minutes for a 1½ inch steak, turning about 1 minute before the halfway point. A meat thermometer should read 130°F. Rest your steaks for 5 minutes before serving, covering lightly with foil.

Is filet mignon good for grilling?

Filet mignon is a delicious, tender cut of beef that melts in your mouth. It happens to be ideal for grilling, as it develops a nice crust over high heat while the center becomes juicy and succulent. It cooks fairly quickly once the grill is hot, just a few minutes on each side.

How much does a filet mignon steak weigh?

This muscle does very little work and is non-weight bearing, which is why it’s very tender! A fully trimmed and tied beef tenderloin will weigh between four and six pounds, and will yield eight to twelve 8-ounce filet mignon steaks approximately 1½-inches thick. Filet mignon steaks are the most expensive, tender, and desirable cut of steak.
