1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
2. Prepare a 9 x 13" baking pan by spraying with cooking spray and/or lightly but thoroughly flouring the bottom (if needed – my pan doesn't need this).
3. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt until thoroughly combined.
4. In a second medium bowl, combine sugar and butter until butter is completely incorporated into the sugar. The mixture will be crumbly, similar to wet sand. (I find it's easiest to do this with my hands, rubbing the butter into the sugar with my fingers, but you can also use an electric mixer.) Add eggs, water, and vanilla, and stir until thoroughly combined. Add the dates and walnuts and stir again to distribute evenly.

1. Soak the dates in warm water for about 10 minutes to soften them (I recommend even longer if your dates are old or on the harder side). Drain the water and lightly squeeze the dates to release excess moisture.
2. Place the dates in a blender or food processor and pulse a few times to break them down some. Add in the nuts and pulse until the nuts are broken into smaller pieces as shown in the photos (a few larger chunks are okay too!).
3. In a small baking dish (I used an 8×6″ little dish but a bread pan also works) lined with parchment paper, press the date and nut mixture into the bottom so that it’s even.
4. Melt the chocolate in a small bowl by microwaving it in 30 second increments, stirring in between. Pour the chocolate over the date mixture and spread it out evenly.
