Avalakki Khara Pongal is a popular recipe in Karnataka cuisine. I have heard about Aval sakkarai pongal and tasted it in a friend’s house too during Navaratri too. When my friend Meera shared the Ash gourd dosa recipe, she shared this recipe of Avalakki pongal also. I always love her recipes and shared a few of her recipes in Jeyashri’s kitchen.
soak 2 cups of avalakki / poha in water for about 5 minutes or till they turn soft yet retain their shape. drain them and make sure the pohas are easily smashed when you press it. heat oil and add mustard seeds, urad dal, jeera and hing. allow them to crackle. also add curry leaves at this stage. ( i dint have curry leaves so i skipped it)
Also in karnataka style khara pongal, equal proportions of rice and mung daal are used, where as in regular pongal mung daal proportion will be less. Sweet pongal recipe is almost similar to the regular sweet pongal except the addition of grated coconut. You can also add little milk but its optional and I dont add it.
firstly, in a bowl take 1 cup poha and rinse with water. drain off the water and transfer it to the bowl. now add 1 cup rice flour, 1 onion, few curry leaves and 2 tbsp coriander. also add 1 inch ginger, 2 chilli, 1 tsp cumin and ½ tsp salt. squeeze and mix well combining all the ingredients well. now add hot water and start to knead the dough.
