Thankfully for Jacob, the Oreo couldn't touch his Hydrox. The Oreo was priced cheaper and came off as a generic cookie, and the Hydrox remained the favorite. Nabisco essentially produced the Oreo at a loss. For the years leading up to their deaths, each brother had their one victory: Jacob the Hydrox, and Joseph the bigger company.
It debuted in 1908, and was manufactured by Sunshine Biscuits for over 90 years. The similar Oreo cookie, introduced in 1912, was inspired by the Hydrox. The Oreo eventually exceeded Hydrox in popularity which resulted in the Hydrox being perceived as an imitator, although it was the original.
Whether it was due to being more delicious or just better marketing, the Oreo cookie quickly surpassed the original competitor, and they even filed for a trademark on this type of cookie soon after its creation in 1912. Despite Oreo cookies taking over in commercial markets, Hydrox cookies are still available.
The cookies were not specifically mentioned by name on the Carvel website, but they were identified as "hydrox" (lower-case 'h') on the in-store posters. Carvel currently uses Oreo cookies in its ice cream goods. In 2014, Leaf Brands registered the "Hydrox" trademark, which had been abandoned by former owner Kellogg's. [5]
