1. Have ready 6 hot, sterilized half-pint jars and their lids.
2. Place the berries and sugar in a large bowl. Gently stir together and let sit for 10-15 minutes.
3. In a large nonreactive saucepan, gently stir together the berries and lemon juice. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, reduce the heat to medium and cook, uncovered, stirring frequently and removing any foam, until the jam has thickened, about 15 minutes. It will continue to thicken as it cools.
4. Ladle the hot jam into the jars, leaving 1/4 inch of headspace. Remove any air bubbles. Wipe the rims clean and seal tightly with the lids.

5. Prepare the boiling water canner. Heat jars in simmering water until ready for use. Do not boil. Wash lids in warm soapy water and set bands aside.
6. Combine berries in an 8-quart saucepan. Gradually stir in pectin. Bring mixture to a full rolling boil that cannot be stirred down, over high heat, stirring constantly.
7. Add the entire measure of sugar, stirring to dissolve. Return mixture to a full rolling boil. Boil hard for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Skim foam, if necessary.
8. Ladle hot jam into hot jars, one at a time, leaving a ¼ inch headspace. Wipe rims. Center lids on jar and apply band, adjust to fingertip tight. Place the jar in a boiling water canner. Repeat until all jars are filled.
