The Italian Sesame Seed Cookie batter comes together in a snap and is made with simple ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen. You’ll cream together butter, granulated sugar, eggs, milk and vanilla (or anise) extract and baking powder. Then you’ll add flour until a soft and pliable dough comes together.
Basically an anise flavored butter cookie covered in sesame seeds. The smell when removing them from the oven is wonderful! After trying my hand at countless sesame cookie recipes, my Italian girlfriend shared her Aunt Anne's recipe and I knew my search had ended!
Combine the flour, baking powder and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. Turn onto a lightly floured surface, knead 10-12 times or until smooth. Divide dough into 8 portions. Shape each portion into a 24-in. log. Cut logs into 2-in. pieces. Place sesame seeds and milk in separate shallow bowls.
Instead of all white sugar, use half white and half brown sugar. Instead of dipping the rolled cookie in milk, dip in sugar water before rolling in the sesame seeds. Oh, and they use crisco instead of butter. One last note - before making these, rinse the sesame seeds, then spread on cookie sheet and lightly toast in oven. erika Rating: 5 stars
