Made with a hoagie roll, Italian meats, provolone & parmesan cheese, and a creamy & tangy grinder salad … it is no wonder this loaded recipe went viral on TikTok. It is hearty, fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious!
If you have scrolled on TikTok lately, you have probably seen examples of the grinder being made. Thick, crusty bread, sliced cheese of your choice, Italian style meats such as salami, prosciutto are piled high, toasted and topped with this creamy grinder salad.
The recipe was originally shared by 29-year-old TikTok creator Gray Fultz, but it was actually invented by her boyfriend, Josh Wright, who used to own a restaurant in Virginia where he made the sandwich for his customers. Fultz posted a video of Wright making the sandwich on March 28 and described what he was doing throughout the process.
The original grinder sandwich seems to have originated in New England by an Italian shopkeeper. Some claim the sandwich coined the name “grinder” because it is such a hefty, hearty sandwich that you have to grind your teeth into it in order to eat it. While others claim it came from the slang word for dockworkers, who grinded hulls.
