LEAF Brands is proud to bring back Hydrox, the Original Sandwich Cookie! Yep, it predated Oreo and was always free of animal fats. LEAF rolled the recipe back to when real sugar, non-hydrogenated oils and high-quality cocoa were used. After years of waiting, you can now enjoy Hydrox cookies once again.
The cookies were available nationally for a limited time, and less than a year later Kellogg's had removed Hydrox from their web site. The Carvel ice cream franchise sold ice-cream goods manufactured with "Hydrox" cookie crumbs until 2012. Carvel used the cookies' all- kosher status as a selling point, as the original Oreo recipe used lard. [3]
As Leaf Brands tells it, at least, there are some subtle but real differences between a Hydrox and an Oreo cookie. They claim that the cookie part of a Hydrox uses darker chocolate and offers more of a crunch than what you'd get from an Oreo (though it'd be interesting to see how it holds up to a milk bath).
