This Kerala style spicy crab curry is made with roaste coconut, peppercorns, garlic, cumin and chillies. It is one of the common ways of making crab in the South. It uses tamarind which gives that sourness along with the spiciness. The addition of black pepper gives that additional punch to the gravy.
For tempering – This crab curry is tempered with coconut oil, mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, dry red chillies, curry leaves and shallots. Kerala Crab Curry can be served with steamed rice, Kerala parotta, appam, ghee roast dosa, iddiyappam or even idli.
Heat the oil in a cooking pan and add onions. Sauté it until it gets soft and translucent. Add garlic and curry leaves. Stir and fry for about one minute. Add fenugreek seeds. Stir and cook until the onion gets a golden color. Now add the cleaned crabs. Add tamarind juice. Add salt, turmeric powder, and curry powder.
Add shallots, garlic and curry leaves and saute for 3-4 minutes. Add tomatoes & turmeric powder along with the ground masala and fry till the oil separates.
