WebLet’s take a look at the most common mistakes to avoid when cooking with cannabis, along with their solutions. 1. Using Way Too Much Cannabis Cooking with …

    1. Use High-Quality Flower. Different cultivars of cannabis have varying effects, thanks to each strain’s unique genetic makeup of cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids (chemotype).
    2. Calculate Your Dosages and Potency. Thankfully, a little bit of bud goes a long way. The fats in your base ingredient (more on that later) can only bind with so many cannabinoids.
    3. Decarboxylate Your Cannabis. When making edibles, it’s not as easy as tossing your bud into a recipe and calling it a day. To activate your cannabis, you need to decarboxylate it–heat it–to transform the THCA in the plant to THC, the CBDA into CBD, and so on.
    4. Don’t Overchop Your Weed. Once your weed’s decarbed, it’s time to infuse your carrier ingredient of choice. Many edible recipes online tell you to grind your weed ultra-fine to infuse your butter or oil better.
    5. Select Your Infused Ingredient. You may opt for either cannabutter or infused oil, depending on your recipe. Making each kind of infused ingredient is roughly the same, so it’s really up to your taste preferences and what kind of recipes you’d like to make.
    6. COOKING WITH RAW CANNABIS. The number one mistake newbies make? Trying to use raw cannabis. Heat is necessary to activate the THC and/or CBD in cannabis, via a process known as decarboxylation.
    7. GRINDING YOUR CANNABIS TOO FINE. While some canna chefs recommend grinding cannabis with a food processor or coffee grinder, there are convincing reasons not to.
    8. SPENDING HUGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY ON YOUR COOKING BUD. A little goes a long way. Many novices waste lots of bud when they start experimenting in the kitchen.
    9. FORGETTING TO ADD WATER TO YOUR OIL OR BUTTER. While some purists will tell you this is hearsay, adding water to your infusion is a nifty trick. This way, your butter/oil won't burn and your cannabinoids won't degrade.
    10. SQUEEZING OUT EVERY LAST DROP OF THE INFUSION. After infusing cannabutter, you’ll need to slowly and carefully strain it. As with many things in the kitchen, cheesecloth is the most ideal filter as it only lets the oil through.
