Add aniseed (moti saunf), cinnamon, black peppercorns, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, black mustard seeds, poppy seeds (khus khus), ginger paste, coconut, and 2 tablespoons water. Grind to a fine paste and reserve. This should yield a heaping ½ cup of xacuti paste.
2. Pour oil into a heavy kadhai or wok placed on high heat. Slide in onion and stir fry till translucent. Toss in sliced garlic and fry till onion turns golden brown, 10 to 11 minutes. Add reserved xacuti paste and cook, stirring, for 2 to 3 minutes.
3. Add chicken to the kadhai and stir to coat well with the xacuti paste. Add salt, stir, and then cover and allow to cook for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally.
4. Pour in thin coconut milk and tamarind paste. Stir, then cover and cook for a couple of minutes. Remove lid and braise chicken till cooked through, about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
