To make the sour cherry barbecue sauce, combine all the ingredients, except the puréed cherries, in a medium saucepan. Bring the mixture to the boil, reduce the heat to a strong simmer and cook, stirring frequently, for 30–35 minutes or until thickened to a sauce consistency.
Ingredients. 1 1 medium onion, chopped. 2 2 tablespoons butter. 3 2 garlic cloves, minced. 4 2 cups fresh or frozen dark sweet cherries, pitted and coarsely chopped. 5 1 cup ketchup. 6 2/3 cup packed brown sugar. 7 1/4 cup cider vinegar. 8 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce. 9 2 teaspoons ground mustard. 10 1/2 teaspoon pepper.
The bulk of the sauce is ketchup, but it is punched up with Worcestershire, cider vinegar, brown sugar, mustard powder, paprika, and cayenne. Most cherry barbecue sauces are conventional pantry-style barbecue sauces with some cherries added as an afterthought. For my own recipe I didn’t want to do that.
Add garlic; cook 1 minute longer. Stir in the remaining ingredients. Cook, uncovered, over medium-low heat for 20 minutes or until cherries are tender and sauce is thickened, stirring occasionally. My Note: I Purchased the Taste of Home Grill It cookbook and this was one of the recipes I've tried.
