Traditional Italian anisette cookies are sweet with a distinct flavour and a soft cake-like texture. My low-carb version is slightly sweet, crunchy, and has a pleasant anise flavour that is not overpowering. I also added some ground cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.
This Peppernuts recipe is also called by these names: Mennonite peppernuts recipe, peppernuts anise cookies recipe, German pepper nut cookies recipe, pepper nut cookie recipe, pepper nuts recipe, and German pfeffernusse recipe. Hi, I'm Linda! Welcome to The Wanderlust Kitchen, where I share recipes and travel adventures from all around the world.
A simpler method of cutting is to hold small portions of rolled dough in left hand, and with kitchen scissors dipped in cold water, snip off small piece of dough directly onto greased (or sprayed) baking sheet. Allow enough space for peppernuts to expand slightly.
Also called Peppernut Cookies, the pepper doesn’t make these cookies spicy, but it is definitely present. Not all recipes include the pepper, but it was a fun ingredient to work with, so I chose to include it. A note about all the spices: if you have a store near you that sells spices in bulk, I recommend buying just the tiny amounts needed.
