There are some variations in making Andhra mamidikaya pappu. I have cooked the raw mangoes in a pan, but you can also cook them with the dal in the pressure cooker. I have used tuvar dal, but even moong dal can be used. This dal can be made thick or with a medium consistency. Addition of mangoes makes the dal on the thicker side.
serve mango dal / mango pappu / mamidikaya pappu with hot steamed rice. add chilli powder before you add dal, else chilli powder will form lumps. you can cook mangoes along with dal in a pressure cooker. however, i prefer mango bites so i cook separately. chilli powder and salt depends on the sourness of mango. so adjust accordingly.
However you can add a few tbsps of moong dal to get a creamy pappu. Ingredients like red chili powder, onions, tamarind and tomato will alter the taste of mango dal. So I do not use them. Use as many green chilies as desired to make it spicy & hot. More andhra pappu recipes on the blog,...
now add a tsp of chilli powder, pinch of turmeric powder and salt to taste. mix well and make sure there are no lumps of chilli powder formed. add cooked dal and give a good mix. make sure the dal is thick so add less water and pressure cook. else your dal will be watery. add water if required and get to a thick dal consistency. boil for 3 minutes.
