Of course this is not a traditional tiramisù, but the layering of the sponge and silky vanilla mascarpone provides the link to the dessert we all know and love.
The mascarpone for the limoncello trifle is mixed with the icing sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest and a bit of limoncello as well. As an alternative I also absolutely love using lemon curd instead of all of the above. If you want to use that you can simply use a couple of table spoons of lemon curd and mix it till you like it.
Whisk egg yolks, sugar and milk in top of a double boiler until mixture is thickened (ribbon stage) and a thermometer reads 160°. Remove from heat; cool completely. Whisk in mascarpone cheese until almost smooth. Whip heavy cream and vanilla until soft peaks form. Combine lemon juice and limoncello.
