Total Time: 25 minsCategory: Appetizer, Main Course, Street FoodCalories: 132 per serving1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together salt and masa harina. Then use a mixing spoon to mix in the water. When the dough gets too hard to mix, begin kneading the dough with your hands until everything is combined.
2. Form the dough into balls about 2 inches in diameter. Use your palm to flatten the balls into a disk.
3. When they are flat, lay about 1 tbsp of shredded cheese in the middle, then ball up the dough to form a ball again. Finally, flatten into a disk again now that the cheese is inside.
4. Heat a cast iron skillet over medium heat, and allow to heat up. Add the pupusa into the pan, and cook for about 5-10 minutes on one side, until the outside is crispy and you see a few small char marks. Flip the pupusa and grill again on the other side. Enjoy!

Rating: 4.5/5(12)
Total Time: 1 hr 10 minsCategory: Appetizers And SnacksCalories: 289 per serving1. Mix masa harina and salt in a bowl. Add the hot water, starting with 1 1/2 cups and mix until all the masa is moistened and a fluffy dough forms. (Add more water if necessary.) Cover and let stand for 15 minutes.
2. Dip your hands into some water to keep the dough from sticking to your hands (and to help hydrate the dough if it crumbles as you shape it, meaning it’s too dry). Pinch off about a golf ball size (roughly 2 Tbsp) of dough and shape into a ball. Form an indentation in the dough ball with your thumbs. Place about 2-3 tsp of cheese into the hole. Pinch a little more dough as needed to cover the hole and seal the filling in the dough ball.
3. Repeat with the remaining dough, keeping already filled masa balls under a damp tea towel while you work.
4. Preheat a skillet or griddle to medium heat and add a little oil.
