Estimated Reading Time: 6 mins1. Place a medium sized dutch oven in a middle rack of the oven and preheat the oven to 450ºF. Allow the dutch oven to warm for 30 minutes.
2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt. Pour in the buttermilk and water and stir with a wooden spoon until the flour is completely incorporated. You want a barely sticky dough. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time. Or, if the dough is too dry, add more water, 1 tablespoon at a time. Once the flour is incorporated, mix the dough with your hand to form a rough ball. With a sharp knife, slice a 3-inch line on the top of the dough.
3. Carefully remove the now hot dutch oven from the oven and place the dough, cut side up, in the dutch oven, taking care not to burn your arms. Place the top on the dutch oven and place back in the oven.
4. Bake with the cover on for about 45 minutes, or until golden and the interior temperature is 170ºF. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
