Combine flour and baking powder, and add to butter mixture, mixing well. Stir in milk until batter is smooth. Pour or spoon batter into prepared pan.

2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Beat vegetable oil spread and the butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Gradually add sugar, about 2 tablespoons at time, beating on medium speed until well mixed, scraping side of the bowl constantly. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes more. Gradually add the egg whites, beating well. Beat in vanilla. Alternately add the flour mixture and milk to the butter mixture, beating on low speed after each addition just until combined. Spread the batter into the prepared pans.
3. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the centers comes out clean. Cool the cake layers in the pans on wire racks for 10 minutes. Remove the cake layers from the pans. Cool completely on wire racks.

2. Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt with 1 cup granulated sugar. Mix the dry ingredients on low speed for 30 seconds to distribute the leavening. With the mixer on low speed, add half the sour cream and toss in the butter a tablespoon at a time.
3. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl. With the mixer running on low speed, add the remaining sour cream and vanilla.
4. Increase the speed to medium and beat about 3-4 minutes until the batter lightens in texture and becomes aerated. If your using a hand mixer this may take an extra minute or two. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl to make sure there are no pockets of unmixed batter.
