2. Heat the oil in a 18 x 9 cm saucepan until really hot and slightly bubbling. The oil should be deep enough to fully cover the onion rings. I used 2 cups.
3. Place all the dry ingredients in a bowl and mix. Add the wet ingredients to another clean bowl and mix to combine. Dip each onion ring in the wet and then into the dry to fully coat and place on a wire rack. Coat 8 at a time and fry in batches of 4 to avoid the whey batter soaking and disappearing into the egg.
4. Carefully lower 4 onion rings at a time into the hot oil and fry about 45 seconds or until golden and crisp. Remove the onion rings with a slotted spoon and place on kitchen paper to soak up any excess fat.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you cook low carb onion rings?

Just remember to cook them in oil on a low-to-moderate heat so they don't burn. Crispy, crunchy on the outside and perfectly tender on the inside, these low-carb onion rings use the unusual combination of coconut flour, Parmesan cheese and garlic powder for a subtle yet surprisingly complementary marriage of tastes.

How do you make onion rings with breadcrumbs?

Remove each onion ring from the water, shaking off any excess and then placing it immediately into the flour, tossing until it’s thoroughly coated, then dip the onion ring into the egg white mixture until it’s thoroughly coated and then into the breadcrumbs, pressing them firmly onto all sides of the onion ring.

Are onion rings baked or fried?

These baked homemade onion rings are just as crunchy and delicious as the fried version, but this onion ring recipe is also gluten free, dairy free and low carb. Heat your oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.

What is the secret to crispy onion ring batter?

The arrowroot powder is the key to this crispy onion ring batter. It crisps up nicely, even baked in the oven! If you don’t have arrowroot powder, you can also use cornstarch. You don’t have to add the sugar, but it gives a tiny bit of sweetness to the rings that I really love.
