Flavorful beef cooked up in a sweet Vidalia onion, wrapped in bacon, stuffed with cheese, and topped with panko bread crumbs. 1 lb. ground beef using other ground meats like turkey or pork also works great! Hollow out the onion until you reach the last layer.
Wrap bacon slices around each onion; secure with a toothpick. Combine basting sauce ingredients in a mixing bowl. Put 2 tablespoons of sauce in the center of each onion.
Remove from oven, and let stand until onions are cool enough to handle. Wrap 1 slice bacon around each onion, and secure with a wooden pick. Return to baking dish, and bake, uncovered, for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
The bacon wrapped around the onion gets slightly crisp and smoky. Basting the onion during the cooking process not only adds flavor but it keeps the onion from drying out. The basting sauce adds so much savoriness. It's almost like a soup in the well of the onion. Gruyere cheese adds rich flavor and makes these wrapped onions seem fancy. So good!
