1. Preheat the oven to 350° and generously butter or spray your skull cake pans with non-stick cooking spray.
2. Combine the chocolate and cocoa in a medium bowl and pour the boiling water over the chocolate. Let stand for about 30 seconds and then whisk until smooth.
3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and sift together the flour, cornstarch, baking soda, and salt. I like to sift the ingredients at least twice.
4. Beat the butter on medium high for about 30 seconds. Then add the brown sugar and beat until fluffy. Scrape down the bowl and then add the eggs one at a time, mixing well (on medium high) after each addition.

2. In a small sauce pan, heat the butter, cocoa powder, salt, and water over medium heat. Cook and stir just until melted and evenly combined. Remove from heat and set aside.
3. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and baking soda to combine. Add half of the melted butter mixture and whisk until blended. The mixture will be thick. Add the remaining butter mixture and whisk to combine. Add the eggs, one at a time, whisking in between until completely blended. Finally, mix in the sour cream and vanilla until smooth.
4. Add the batter to the prepared pan, filling each side to about 90% full. (You may have a little extra batter.) Bake until a wood skewer inserted near the center comes out clean (45 to 50 minutes). Let the cake cool completely in the pan.
