2. Place all the ingredients into a flameproof casserole dish. Place the casserole dish on the hob and bring to the boil.
3. Put the lid on the casserole dish and place the stew in the preheated oven. Cook for 1 hour. (See notes 1 & 2 for alternative cooking methods.)
4. Remove the casserole dish from the oven and serve with soda bread and/or green vegetables.
