You can easily make Chili cheese dogs just like from Dairy Queen (DQ) restaurant right in the convenience of your own home. These hot dogs are simply topped with homemade hot dog chili and shredded cheddar cheese. The chili can either be prepared in the pan on the stove top or in the slow cooker.
Make the chili. After browning the ground beef and sauteing the onion and garlic, add a can of diced tomatoes and season it with chili powder, honey, salt, and pepper. While the chili recipe is very basic, it's richly flavored and perfect on top of hot dogs.
There’s also a good amount of chopped onions in this recipe but they cook down so much you won’t even know they’re in there. Those onions are just there to add tons of flavors, not like the raw onions you might add on top of your chili dog.
Thanks to Daddy B’s mama I can make up a big batch of the copy cat Dairy Queen hot dog chili and freeze it in canning jars to have our own supply of chili.This is Daddy B’s preferred type of chili for his hot dogs. Chili is the only thing he eats on his hot dogs and not just any canned store bought chili can cut the mustard for him.
