2. When the rice is soaked, take a saucepan, add oil to it and heat on medium flame. Then, add cumin seeds, garlic, fennel seeds, ginger in the pan and saute for a minute or two.
3. Next, add sliced onion to the pan and saute until the onion is transparent. Add salt and red chilli powder to the pan and cook for about 30-40 seconds. Then, add the chana dal and cook for about 2-5 minutes, and then add two cups of water to the pan and stir to mix well all the ingredients.
4. Cover the pan with a lid and cook the chana dal for 4-5 minutes until tender. Now, add basmati rice to the pan and mix well with all the other ingredients. Add the rest of the water and cover the pan once again with the lid, cook the rice and dal until the water is completely absorbed.
