1. Ideally, soak the beans overnight. If you forgot to do that, do a quick soak by putting the dried beans in a pot, cover with about 1 inch / 2 centimers of water, and bringing to a boil. Let boil for 1-2 minutes, then take off the heat. Let sit for one hour -- voila, quick-soaked beans!

2. SLOW COOKER FEIJOADA: 1) Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add oil and cook onion and mushrooms for 5-6 minutes or until softened, stirring every now and then. Add garlic and cook for 1 minutes or until fragrant, stirring occasionally. 2) Transfer half of the mixture to the slow cooker, stir in beans, water, baking soda, cumin, sweet potatoes, and bay leaves. 3) Cook on high for 2-4 hours or on low for 8-10 hours. Half hour before cooking time ends, stir in the other half of cooked garlic/onion/mushrroms, salt, pepper, canned tomatoes and tomato paste.
