Cardamom and vanilla go very well together. I didn't add a lot, just 1/2 tsp. The flavour is there but it doesn't smack you in the face. Its very subtle, but you can certainly add more if you want more of a hit. I also added some cardamom along with grated orange zest and orange juice to the creamy icing which tops the finished cake.
