Sukiyaki (鋤焼/すき焼き) is a Japanese dish in the nabemono (Japanese hot pot) style. It consists of thinly sliced beef with other ingredients such as tofu, negi, mushrooms, jelly noodles and cabbage. The sauce is made up of sake, mirin, sugar and soy.
Directions. Add beef slices; cook and stir until browned, about 1 minute. Pour in some broth; bring to a boil. Stir in tofu, cabbage, noodles, shiitake mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, and green onion; simmer until softened, about 5 minutes. Ladle cooked sukiyaki mixture into serving bowls. Replenish broth in the skillet.
Combine the ingredients for the broth in a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Set aside once done. Arrange the sukiyaki ingredients in your Japanese clay pot. Pour the broth in your pot with the ingredients. Cover with a lid and simmer under medium-high heat for 15-30 minutes. Bring to low heat and enjoy!
Despite having a seemingly high number of healthy ingredients, sukiyaki can easily be a very high calorie dish given the usage of beef which is a higher calorie meat, as well as the addition of many other ingredients easily adding up.
